“The Year of Woven Dreams”
My dearest mother passed away in winter 2022, in Tehran. I was in total shock and denial. I couldn’t believe both my parents will no longer be in my hometown. With my mother’s departure, everything related to my past was somehow erased. And I was left with the suspension and dizziness of how to frame my past to my children.
Six months after her departure, my country fell into a cycle of protests led by women, after the brutal death of Mahsa Jina Amini.
Iranians in the diaspora like me weren’t able to return due to the risk of imprisonment. All my connections to my homeland were blocked, as I strived to share my experiences and culture with my kids.
The series “The year of Woven Dreams” is a result of pondering and dreaming of merging two different eras and geographies together; Iran and the outside world, the time my parents were alive and my kids… at least in my dreams and trials I could picture a motherland, and grandparents for my daughters.
